Inverted, transposed, and interconnected realities combine to create similar yet opposite worlds connected by color-flipped Kalo (the Taro plant). In Hawaiian culture, the creation of humans began with the Kalo plant, the big brother. Its placement in the center of the painting symbolizes my connection to land, which is a connection to the spiritual world.
On the left side of the painting, the Ulu Tree stands tall, its leaves glistening in the sunlight like a disco ball, heralding a vibrant celebration of life. The Ulu Tree, a symbol of resilience, perseverance, and security in Hawaiian culture, has been a steadfast source of strength and beauty for generations of Hawaiians.
The right side is New York City, East Village, during a rainy day. Although made of concrete and buildings, there is still a vibrancy of color and moments to connect to nature; it requires awareness and intentional connection. A strong emphasis and symbolism are revolving around honoring the Moon. Looking up to the sky at night to see the moon is a small way to feel connected to existence.
